Reminder: Are you a Company Director? DIN required by 30 November

Published on: September 21st, 2022

If you’re a Company Director, you must apply for a Director Identification Number (DIN) through the Australian Business Registry Services by 30 November 2022.

Your DIN is a unique number used to identify you personally, rather than by your company, to help prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities. It is a 15-digit identifier that will stay with you for life, identifying you and where you have worked.

All Company Directors are required to have a DIN allocated to them, including SMSF and Family Trust Corporate Trustee Directors, charities and not-for-profit organisations that are public companies limited by guarantee.

You must apply for your own Director ID, and applications can be made via myGovID or phone. Those living outside Australia can also apply using a paper application form. More information on the application process can be found at: https://www.abrs.gov.au/director-identification-number/apply-director-identification-number.

There has been a phased implementation, and the above applies to you if you became a director on or before 31 October 2021. If you became a director between 1 November 2021 and 4 April 2022, you were required to apply within 28 days of appointment, and from 5 April 2022 onwards, you were required to apply prior to appointment.

Please contact your adviser or accountant if you are unsure if you have completed this process.
